Sam Hazewinkel grew up in Florida. He comes from a wrestling background where his father was a world silver medalist. By the time he got to High School Sam was already a multiple national champion in multiple wrestling styles.
Sam went on to wrestle at the University of Oklahoma under Jack Spates. All four years of competition Sam Hazewinkel never finished less than third. In 2007, in his final attempt to become a NCAA national champion, Sam Hazewinkel lost to Paul Donahoe of Nebraska in overtime.
Although he fell short for his quest to become a NCAA national champion, Sam, a couple of months later, traveled to Vegas and one the Greco Roman National Championships on his road to making the US National Team.
